You can find plenty of websites on the Internet which preach the benefits of colon cleansing. They say it removes parasites and toxins from the digestive tract, reducing
the chances that you'll get certain diseases. Some websites claim it can even help you lose weight and boost
energy.
But does colon cleansing work? Should you even bother?
Reputable medical sites we visited were decidedly skeptical about colon cleansing claims.
Sources at the renowned Mayo Clinic say colon cleansing is unnecessary for overall health, although it may be
helpful before certain medical procedures or examinations.
According to these and other sources, the human colon does a pretty good job of cleansing itself
and you don't need enemas, special diets or pills to maintain excellent colon health.
Many doctors also believe colon cleansing may actually be harmful because it could disrupt the
balance of fluids and electrolytes, resulting in dehydration or salt depletion.
Someone who performs excessive colon cleansing could also trigger anemia, malnutrition and heart
failure.
Colon cleansing is often done to relieve constipation, but
doctors say in most cases it's not needed. If you drink a reasonable amount of water and eat a diet containing
suffient fiber, constipation is unlikely in most cases.
