Culturelle W/lactobacillus GG Probiotic Review

By George Mitchell

Culturelle W/lactobacillus GG, 30-Count Package  is one of the bestselling products in the probiotic category.  Culturelle states that this product has the clinically-proven probiotic lactobacillus GG, which is also known as LGG. Lactobacillus GG is believed to allow helpful bacteria stick to the walls of your colon and intestines, improving the digestive process and helping to eliminate gas and bloating. It works by replacing bacteria that compromise digestive with beneficial bacteria that actually help process what you eat more effectively.

LGG has recently been described as the "gold standard" of probiotics. There have been over 250 clinical trials of LGG, and it has shown to be especially helpful during times of stress when beneficial intestinal bacteria become depleted. Research studies have also demonstrated that it can be helpful in treating symptoms of sporadic colic and promoting regularity. It is also commonly recommended for those taking antibiotics, since these medications often kill both the band and the good bacteria residing in your digestive system.

It contains 10 billion cells, which potentially gives it considerably more probiotic power than a serving of yogurt. In fact, one capsule is approximately equal to 10 servings of probiotic fortified yogurts. It contains no dairy, and no gluten. It also includes inulin, which is taken from chicory roots, and also serves as a replacement for sugar, fat, and flour.

As of this writing, there were more than five dozen reviews on Amazon.com, and most were enthusiastically positive. 46 reviewers gave it the highest possible rating, and another seven gave it the second highest possible rating. One reviewer noted that it was being used successfully by her husband, who is lactose intolerant. The most common complaint by those who disliked the product after buying involved issues with nausea and lightheadedness 1-3 days after taking a capsule. Several reviewers raved about it, however, and noted that it was especially helpful to them in relieving constipation. Still others reported that it also reduced discomfort and shortened their bouts of occasional diarrhea, including traveler's diarrhea. One individual also said she believed the company's claims that it strengthens the immune system because she and two of her children went through two winters without getting colds.

Culturelle with lactobacillus GG can be taken at any hour, with food or without it. Refrigeration is suggested but not necessary, although capsules should be kept in a cool dry place and never put in direct sunlight. Recommended dosage is one capsule per day and Culturelle says it is safe for children of all ages. Those who have trouble swallowing capsules, or are giving the product children, will be happy to note that capsules may also be opened and mixed with foods like applesauce and pudding or dissolved in juice).
