Constipation is relatively common, especially as we age. Most doctors consider constipation to be less than three
bowel movements a week. It generally happens when stool collects in the colon for longer than usual for some
reason. It hardens as its liquid components continue to be absorbed, and it therefore becomes harder to pass.
Constipation causes straining during a bowel movement, which can sometimes be dangerous for the elderly.
Most individuals tend to think of chronic constipation as annoying
but not really dangerous. But constipation could be an indication of a serious underlying disorder that needs
medical attention. These conditions include diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, colon polyps or even colon
cancer.
This the video below, Dr. Julian Spinks describes the general causes of constipation, especially the role played
by diet. He also offers some simple remedies for constipation and ways to avoid becoming constipated. He also
discusses when it's time to see your doctor if you have repeated or continuous constipation.
